This current Etsy seller is one of my favourite shops on Etsy. The colour and beauty of her pieces are striking, and I’m always had a soft spot for jewellery! She has a beautiful range from sophistication to cute and somewhat whimsical with the ‘World’s Smallest Sewing Machine’ or the ‘World’s Smallest Amp’ magnets!

With prices currently ranging from $8 - $28, there is something for most anyone with a desire for something beautiful at a very reasonable price.

Obviously, I’m a fan.

Please tell my readers something about yourself, where you grew up, where you’re living now, affiliations, personal stuff.

I grew up in Newfoundland, in a rural community. After graduating high school, I spent several years travelling across Canada, staying for less than a year in different provinces. When I returned to Newfoundland, I lived in St. John's, and have lived here since then. I am glad that I travelled, but Newfoundland will always be my home. There's nowhere else in the world as safe and serene to me.

How long have you been creating?

I have always enjoyed creating, even as a child. I have tried plastic canvas crafts, sewing, quilt-making, and of course polymer clay and jewellery design. I tried polymer clay over a year ago, and have been hooked ever since. That led to the jewellery design, and I enjoy combining my love for the both of them, creating a unique piece of wearable art.
How long have you been selling on etsy?

I opened my Etsy shop one year ago today! [December 13^th] :) Happy Etsyversary to me! <:-) I started out slowly, unaware of all the work that has to go into an Etsy shop (eg. taking great photos, promoting, creating unique products, etc). But I worked hard and I am pleased with my progress in the last year. Do you sell anywhere besides etsy? Where? How long have you been selling via that venue?

No, I only sell on Etsy. :)

What inspires you to create? Where do you get motivation?

I get inspiration from anything... nature, a tv show, clothing. Anything that grabs my attention inspires me to create something. Most of my ideas and designs come to me as I am falling asleep, so I keep a notepad and pen next to my bed for that reason.


Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.

Usually when I think of a new idea, I get working on it within 24 hours because I am excited to actually see my idea turned into a reality. I don't have a schedule for anything. Everything is completely random. I create whenever I feel like it, take photos when I can, and list the item within a few days of creating it.

Do you feel like you’ve been affected/influenced by the Newfoundland culture in your chosen art?

In some ways, yes. Newfoundlanders are known for their hospitality and I always treat my customers in this manner, going above and beyond to make them happy. Also, this beautiful province inspires me to create some of my items.

What other activities occupy your time?

I enjoy spending time with my husband and my two kitty cats. :) I love decorating, so I am always changing my surroundings and redesigning. I also love to shop, both locally and online!

If you could recommend one book, one television program, one movie, one song what would they be?

Book - "The Notebook"
Television Program - any decorating show!
Movie - probably "The Notebook" as well. I'm not a huge movie buff, actually. :)
Song - my mind is completely blank! Sorry! :P

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?

I would love to go to France. It just seems so romantic and unique.

What methods do you use to advertise or promote your products?

I currently do not advertise, and the only promoting tool I use is a Facebook Fan Page. I find that word of mouth is great, and I have many repeat buyers as well. :)

NL Etsy Shop Feature: RussellPitcher

After yet another break, I’ve returned with another instalment of the NL Etsy Shop features. I will ramble a bit first, if you would prefer, skip on down to the feature and ignore my rambling.

It seems as though the world is spinning much too fast, each day blurs into the next. I can never keep up on the million things that seem to be heaped up on my plate, and those are just the mundane day-to-day things. If only I could catch up on sleep, or laundry, or cleaning, or make more stock for my shop. I suppose with a 6 month old, falling behind on these kinds of tasks is understandable. Or maybe I could eat more chocolate for energy, I guess yogurt and green vegetables makes more sense.

Today I FINALLY got rid of the random Christmas decorations that were left behind after I took the Christmas tree down. I was eager to get the tree up, and especially eager to get it down too. I love the beauty of putting it up, the glow, the cosiness, but once Christmas has passed, I’m thrilled to reclaim my living room.

For the past while, I’ve been thinking about clutter and minimalism. I love a clean de-cluttered look to a home, but I’m afraid I have much too much stuff. Obviously I can’t just throw things out. First of all, I think something will eventually be useful to have, and most importantly I don’t want to create more garbage for our already burdened mother earth. I am at a lost for what to do. It’s not yard sale season, and most of it isn’t suitable for a yard sale anyway. I don’t have the time or energy to repurpose everything into something new and useful and sell it. I’ve already got a load of things to donate to Good Will. I’m thinking that’s my best bet for most everything. Most items are trash worthy, if I felt comfortable adding that much to a landfill (none of it is recyclable). It’s a conundrum.

I am from Blaketown, Trinity Bay, I lived in Corner Brook for 6 years while I was finishing my Fine Arts Degree, and I now live in Conception Bay South. I have three beautiful children 8, 11, and 14. I love sculpture and fabric based arts, rug hooking, drawing, and printmaking. I find it hard to only work in one medium so I jump around.

How long have you been creating?
I feel like I have been creating my whole life. Making one thing or another. I used to drive my mother crazy begging her to help me sew this or that.

How long have you been selling on etsy?
I am not sure I think a couple of years now, it is a great site.

Do you sell anywhere besides etsy? Where? How long have you been selling via that venue?
I am a member of the NL Craft Council and usually do the craft fairs.

I also sell work in various craft stores around the province. I am having an exhibit this summer with a friend of mine Sarah Feltham, at The Diamond House in Glover Town. I have sold work to the Provincial Procurement Program and have won the NL Arts and Letters Award.


What inspires you to create? Where do you get motivation?
I am inspired by my dreams, my children, my feelings, and my surroundings and not always in that order.

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.
I try to make something every day. I am working on a group of 10 sculptures now made from celluclay all of the sculptures will have a common theme; a little red house, a woman or human like character and something menacing. I am in the process of building a studio and can't wait to rid my house of art stuff.

Do you feel like you’ve been affected/influenced by the Newfoundland culture in your chosen art?
Absolutely how can you not be affected by the beauty of Newfoundland. I love the sight and sounds of the ocean, I love the old houses and the fresh air.

What other activities occupy your time?
I enjoy hiking, canoeing, volley ball, swimming, dancing, hanging out with my kids and going for coffee with my friends.

If you could recommend one book, one television program, one movie, one song what would they be?
My recent favourite book is "Reincarnation", it follows the lives of 4 individuals as they are reincarnated over and over until they get it right.

My favourite television programs are "Charmed" and "Star Trek". You know you love it when you would rather watch reruns than anything else on TV! Sci-fi rocks!

It is so hard to pick one movie but if I had to pick I would think "The Princess Bride"

I love anything by Sarah McLachlan.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
I would love to go to Italy, to see the architecture and art I studied in school.

What methods do you use to advertise or promote your products?
I really need to get better at the advertising and promoting. Etsy is good but I need to add new work more often.

NL Etsy Shop Feature: Em's Gems Crafts

I’m astounded with the level of ‘busyness’ that has infected the life of myself and my immediate family. It’s as though Christmas barged in (as lovely and family oriented as it was), and then swept out leaving loads of boxes, paper, bags, items to be sorted into our home, and a lot of laundry. Christmas also left my family with a cold, which still hasn’t completely cleared up. So amidst all the organizing, cleaning and folding I have had on my plate, I’ve also had a sick baby, husband and self to nurse. So this has inevitably left me with having to abandon many lovely things I COULD have blogged as well as left my NL shop series in the lurch as sorts. So, alas, with sincere apologies I have returned to continue featuring the lovely artists who sell on Etsy from Newfoundland. I will do this with a short but lovely feature on Emsgemscrafts!

NL Shop Feature on Em’s Gem’s Crafts

A lovely shop opporated by a girl named Emily currently offering light switch covers and pins at $8 - $16 USD. Great prices for something unique and beautiful.

I have lived my whole life in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador. I have aboriginal Metis Inuit heritage and I am finishing my last year of high school. I have been making crafts for sale for about six years but became very serious about it in 2006 after I attended the Aboriginal Youth Art Gathering in St. John’s. I do not do retail sales, except on etsy, I concentrate on wholesale. I sell to three stores in Labrador and three in Newfoundland including Colony of Avalon at Ferryland. My products are also available on the Apollo Ferry. I opened my etsy shop in March 2009.

I work in polymer clay mostly. My products are inspired by the wild berries that grow near my home here in Labrador. Lots of people have suggested that I should make different designs, but I choose to create different types of products all with the berry theme. That’s what I do best. Berries are a traditional food here and berry picking is a traditional activity and one that we look forward to each year. I’ve just finished a large contract of making the medals for the Trapline Marathon – the design was of an intricately detailed snowshoe with redberries and the name of the event.


I am actively involved in my school and my community as a volunteer. I tutor three times a week and help with community events. I have been involved with Youth Ventures for the past two years and have won awards for my products. Recently I was approved under the Provincial Crafts of Character program and will be developing new marketing materials and point of sale displays. My products are now being profiled in the “Getting the Message Out” presentations that are offered by the Department of Innovation Trade and Rural Development.


I am enrolled in art class in school and experimenting with acrylic and water color painting, and really enjoying it. I also like creating jewelry with glass and crystal beads, and semi-precious stones. I am experimenting with cake decorating too and enjoy watching “Cake Boss”.

I don’t know what I’ll study in post secondary, but I will always be a crafter.

NL Etsy Shop Feature: MayberryCreations

Mayberry Creation’s is another beautiful Newfoundland based business selling on etsy. Who specializes in crocheted hats, and often lists other crocheted items, but the artist isn’t limited to working with just Yarn. Mayberry Creation’s also has listed a number of items made from up cycled materials. Her hats are particularly creative with many unique and whimsical designs. Please tell my readers something about yourself, where you grew up, where you’re living now, affiliations, personal stuff.
I was born, raised and currently living in St. John's, Newfoundland. I love it here; the rocks, the sky, the ocean...it's everything that encompasses home to me. I'm 35, work part-time and craft part-time (for profit; I craft all the time for pleasure!). My husband and I have been married 15 years and have three children. My children are wonderfully, individually creative, artistic, dramatic and, most of all, weird! :)

How long have you been creating?

As long as I can remember. I learned to sew in elementary school from my mother and Home Ec classes. I learned to knit around the same time. I started crocheting about six or seven years ago, and it's quickly become my favourite. I learned to needlefelt about two years ago, and also love to recycle thrift-store finds into new and wonderful creations.

How long have you been selling on etsy?

Only about a year.

Do you sell anywhere besides etsy? Where? How long have you been selling via that venue?

I've sold in local shops for the past four-to-five years. The past two years I've been selling at the St. John's Farmers Market (SJFM) every week (in season six months a year). I also do all sorts of craft fairs and events, and am part of MAAP, a support group of artists and crafters.

What inspires you to create? Where do you get motivation?

My biggest motivation is what I see around me; the natural beauty of Newfoundland, the textures and colours found all over. I also am inspired by simpler things, such as how two colours or textures interact. And, of course, by my children. I started making animal hats when my son was about five; he'd draw a picture of an animal and I'd turn it into a hat. I also try to create things I think my fashion-forward daughters would like; they each have such different styles!

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.

Oh my, where to start! I love textiles; yarn, fabric, wool roving, felt. I can start with an idea of the finished product, or I can start with the materials and see where it takes me. I craft at home; my living room and dining room are my studio and craft room :)

Do you feel like you’ve been affected/influenced by the Newfoundland culture in your chosen art?

Yes, I really do. I am truly bound to this place, and it affects me in all sorts of ways. I love the colours in the ocean; those blues are a huge influence for me. And the juxtaposition of jagged rocks, crashing surf and green spaces. I love to take traditional materials (such as ragg wool) and use them in new and unusual ways.

What other activities occupy your time?

My crafts are my hobbies :) I also spend time volunteering with the SJFM and surfing online. There's also home and household responsibilities!

If you could recommend one book, one television program, one movie, one song what would they be?

Can't really name one of anything...I love Shanneyganock, the Navigators, Great Big Sea...all sorts of traditional and modern Newfoundland musicians. As for TV, I love geek-TV; documentaries and true crime. Movies and books? Harry Potter!

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?

Norway and Ireland, preferably on a cruise. I really wish to see the land where so many Newfoundlanders hail from; to compare, as the song says; the green of the shamrock to the green of the pine. And I've seen several documentaries on Reykjavik and my middle daughter and I are captivated by the city. Of course, the kids want to visit Europe; see London and Paris, so I'd also love to take them there!

What methods do you use to advertise or promote your products? Facebook and Kijiji, mostly. I find that the SJFM and the craft fairs I attend bring large crowds and people have started looking for me :) that's so exciting!

OPdesign’s is a Newfoundland based Jewellery shop, with prices ranging from $10 - $40 US. A little something for everyone, the delicate, the classic and the fun. This seller isn’t a one-craft-wonder; she has jewellery using a number of materials. Here’s a little about her business in her words. Enjoy!

Please tell my readers something about yourself, where you grew up, where you’re living now, affiliations, personal stuff.
Well, I am a university student who grew up in Newfoundland, and am living there currently working on an English degree! And what am I planning on doing with said degree? I know I can't do much with just a BA in English, but the plan is to do grad school eventually.

How long have you been creating?
I have been creating jewelery, along with some dabbling in other crafts for about 15 years. I got a jewelery DIY kit as a gift once as a kid and never looked back! I love every moment I'm creating.
How long have you been selling on Etsy?
I've only been selling for about 7 months. I finally got the nerve to try selling once a couple of friends of mine told me I'd be able to sell what I make no problem, then I was directed to Etsy, and I set up shop.

Do you sell anywhere besides etsy? Where? How long have you been selling via that venue?
I don't really sell anywhere else. Since I'm generally new at selling (and still at school) I've stuck to Etsy and a few live craft sales.

What inspires you to create? Where do you get motivation?

Hmm, interesting! I guess inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere, but I find my best motivation comes from buying new supplies, as well as playing around with my materials to see if I can come up with something interesting.

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.
I can only make jewelery when I have loads of free time on my hands and know I won't be interrupted for long periods. Sometimes I can take a good 3 or 4 hours to make something without realizing the time going by!

When I do create though, I wash my hands, open my big black bag of supplies, get settled in my studio (i.e. a large table in my room :) and go to work! I love working with wire and stone beads, so I have several pairs of wire pliers, and lots of those sectioned plastic craft boxes full of beads. I also love using polymer clay, so I have a few clay tools, many shades of clay, and many many rejected clay beads floating around those containers. However, whatever I'm making, I always listen to music. The current fave is Christmas music.

Do you feel like you’ve been affected/influenced by the Newfoundland culture in your chosen art?
I've certainly been affected by the Newfoundland culture! It's almost hard not to be while living here! Although my pieces on Etsy don't scream "Newfoundland" I try to buy local materials when possible, and I especially love using labradorite in my jewelry.

I've actually been experimenting with making clay puffins and town houses, which may or may not end up in my shop. It'll depend on how well they turn out!

What other activities occupy your time?
I love reading, writing, (hence the English degree) playing video games and D&D, and watching anime (I am a huge dork, by the way :).

If you could recommend one book, one television program, one movie, one song what would they be?
One of each?

Hmm, I don't know if I can recommend only one book, but I'll go with "Life of Pi". It's beautifully written, and it's one of those books that makes you think a lot about your outlook on life -- something I love in a book.

As far as TV goes, I don't watch much, but I'm a huge Joss Whedon fan. I just finished "Firefly"; it's a great show with lots of sci-fi elements (again with the dorkiness).

It'll be hard to choose one movie too, but I'll go with "A Clockwork Orange". I have not yet had the chance to read the book, but the movie is fantastic, making you think about life again. Very disturbing though.

Finally, one of my favourite songs is "The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel. The music flows beautifully and it recounts a story of vulnerability that I find very touching.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
I would love to see Europe just so I could see the castles! That, and of course to see the various famous monuments, and generally get to see other cultures. I would also love to see Japan. There is so much amazing culture and history in Japan, so it's a very close second.

What methods do you use to advertise or promote your products?
Being a student with little money for advertising, I've relied on various social networking sites like twitter and Facebook. I also have a blog, I've made my own business cards, and I give my jewelry as gifts frequently.
